Zynga, social game developer, launched today the mobile version for Mafia Wars called “Mafia Wars – Atlantic City“.

Mafia Wars Atlantic City is the first game designed in the HTML5 format, which means its playable on a variety of platforms, including iPad, iPhone/iPod Touch, Android, WebOS, and BlackBerry devices.

Zynga makes a bundle of money on Facebook, where it has 245 million monthly active users. Mafia Wars being currently the fifth most popular game on Facebook, where it has 19.1 million monthly active users and 3 million daily players. But the potential of the mobile market is much greater and Zynga has to come up with more hits on that front.

Zynga has aggressively expanded its mobile strategy in recent months, acquiring studios like iPhone developer Newtoy (Games With Friends), Japanese mobile social games firm Unoh, and Frankfurt-based Aves engine (for mobile browser games) creator Dextrose AG, now Zynga Germany.

The new mobile Mafia Wars Atlantic City game is playable on a mobile web site at m.mafiawars.com or can be downloaded from GetJarā€™s app store. Users can collect from their properties for all Mafia Wars cities, not just Atlantic City, by going to the mobile website.

And after putting out free iPhone editions for many of its popular titles, the company released its first Android app, Zynga Poker, last month. Before the end of the year, it also plans to publish FarmVillage, a localized mobile version of FarmVille for Japan, on Mixi.
